Third Asian Elephant Range State Meeting started in Kathmandu, Nepal

The Third Asian Elephant Range State Meeting being hosted by the Government of Nepal in collaboration with IUCN SSC Asian Elephant Specialist Group (AsESG) and support of Asian Elephant Conservation Fund of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service kick-started in Kathmandu, Nepal on 27th April 2022. The meeting was formally inaugurated by Mr Ramsahay Prasad Yadav, Hon’ble Minister of Forest and Environment, Government of Nepal. Mr Vivek Menon, Chair, IUCN SSC Asian Elephant Specialist Group delivered the keynote address and Dr Ram Chandra Kandel, Director General, Department of National Parks and Wildlife Conservation (DNPWC), Nepal delivered the welcome address.

The three-day hybrid meeting is being attended by all the 13 Range State Government officials and select AsESG members to discuss the challenges faced by Asian Elephants and finding solution to address them. This meeting aims at strengthening Government networking among the Asian elephant range countries, identify common problems and share lessons learned, knowledge, and experiences to conserve Asian elephants across their range, and raise awareness about Asian elephants with other Government agencies, and national and international media and donors to support conservation.

During the three-day meeting, delegates will discuss on various topics related to Asian elephant conservation such as elephant population management, human-elephant conflict mitigation, minimising impacts of linear infrastructures on elephant habitat, elephant corridors management, preventing illegal wildlife illegal trade, captive elephant health care and welfare, emerging diseases and strengthening transboundary cooperation.

The meeting will conclude with a Launching Ceremony of “The Kathmandu Declaration for Asian Elephant Conservation” on 29 April 2022. .
